Gas Recovery

Alchevsk Iron & Steel Works, Ukraine

The Alchevsk Iron and Steel Works (AMK) are located near Donetsk city in South East Ukraine and are owned by the Industrial Union of Donbass (IUD). In 2006 IUD made the decision to build a 300MWe Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (GTCC) Plant at Alchevsk in response to environmental restrictions, soaring natural gas prices from Russia and the need for more efficient energy usage.

The waste gases from Alchevsk’s blast furnaces, coke ovens and converters will help meet its own electricity needs as well as sell electricity to the grid. Technology Partners (TPL) were appointed process engineering consultants by the main works contractor, Azovintex Limited, in 2007 to support the basic process design of the gas distribution system to the GTCC station.

Technology PartnersTPL have been instrumental in co-ordinating the development of the process design with clients Azovintex and AMK and in liaison with the metallurgical industry research and design institute, Giprostal. TPL has also assisted the HAZOP review with consultants Grimley Smith Associates Limited of the UK. TPL’s project partners were also successful in winning the design and supply contracts for the critical system equipment and technology. These included Th. Jansen process valves, Piller industrial fans, Clayton Walker gasholders and Opkon process control and automation.

With the process design now complete and construction underway, TPL is preparing to support the commissioning of the plant.

TPL’s Engineering Division also offers consultancy in gas cleaning, storage and the associated environmental processes whilst its Sales Division completes the package by representing the suppliers of the key process technologies: gas holders, automation and control systems, boosters and valves.

Supported by a worldwide network of associates, TPL is a trusted partner in process technology.
